Movies: Could All-Female Fast & Furious Cast Work?
When it comes to franchises, not many have evolved quite like The Fast & The Furious franchise. So far they’ve done 10 movies in the main series and one spin-off, Hobbs & Shaw. Now that the franchise appears to be working towards the end with the main cast, could they make an all-female Fast & Furious spin-off? Current casting choices show potential.
Fast & Furious started off as a race team using high-end street racers to hijack electronics. The original film thrust Vin Diesel into the spotlight and helped further the career of young star Paul Walker. From there the series has evolved into something so far from the original plot that it’s almost unrecognizable. Every movie has gone more prominent and more explosive. Fast X is on the horizon and it appears this will be where the main/original story ends.

While The Fast & Furious franchise has always had a strong female presence, they’ve upped the ante in the past few films. The original started strong with Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster. Along the way, they picked up stars like Eva Mendez and Gal Gadot with more recent additions like Nathalie Emmanuel, and Charlize Theron. They’ve even added strong newcomers to the franchise like Brie Larson and Daniela Melchior. They’ve picked up quite the roster of actresses along the way.
As the main cast can’t go on forever, could the Fast & Furious franchise pivot to a more female-led cast? So many franchises have tried that in the past and failed, but this isn’t the Ghostbusters franchise putting out comedic actresses with no chemistry. There’s a large cast of well-respected and critically-acclaimed strong female characters. Whether it’s box office success like Daniela Melchior in The Suicide Squad, or starring in the small screen greats like Nathalie Emmanuel in Game of Thrones, each of these actresses along the way has had great performances throughout their career.
If the Fast & Furious franchise wants to continue to evolve they have enough ammo to do so. They’ve got fan favorites along the way and they even have a way to transition with some of the old cast passing the torch to the next wave of stars. Some may say it’s time for the franchise to end, but with a fresh take and pivoting away from older characters, there are ways for it to survive.
