In West Canaan, Texas, high school football reigns supreme. When starting quarterback Lance Harbor (Paul Walker) turns up injured, the Coyotes’ ruthless coach, Bud Kilmer (Jon Voight), must promote benchwarmer Jonathon “Mox” Moxon (James Van Der Beek) to lead the team in its quest for a divisional title. Suddenly thrown into the spotlight, Mox must deal with the pressure of carrying the aspirations of an entire town on his shoulders, as he struggles to pursue his own very different dreams.
There are so many great performances from the 1999 hit Varsity Blues. We get James Van Der Beek in his post-Dawson’s Creek days. Jon Voight as the ass-riding head coach. Pre-Fast & Furious Paul Walker. Scott Caan long before Hawaii Five-0. This movie was a teen drama with all the comedy that fits perfectly in your typical 90s movie. It’s easily one of the most quotable movies of its kind and Paramount could easily turn this old favorite into a new tv dramedy.

Think of it as Friday Night Lights with the inappropriate humor turned up to 11. Varsity Blues in the perfect high school television drama. The market for these style shows is out there so why not follow a season-long story where Mox is constantly in the background of a superior athlete in Lance. You could spice up the drama with flashbacks showing his struggles with not being good enough. Finish out season one with them with Lance getting hurt and fading out leading into season 2 where Mox takes over, struggles with success, and his newfound popularity takes a toll on his everyday life.
Varsity Blues would be perfect with the right team writing in a new series. Sports shows have more seriousness and this will be the perfect opportunity to capitalize on a different tone in humor. If we’re leaning into the reboot phase, then Varsity Blues should be on the ticket in the near future.
