The game of football just comes easily for Myles Garrett. One of the leagues best defensive players, the third-year vet dominates opposing offensive lines. He’s the heart of the Cleveland Browns defense. The crazy thing is, Garrett still has room to improve.

If you saw the Browns Week 2 game against the New York Jets, you know how impressive Garrett is. He racked up three sacks against the Jets offensive line. It was near impossible for them to contain him. He got to the QB at will. It was a similar story in Week 1 as well, as Garrett recorded 2 sacks against the Tennessee Titans.

The 5 sacks are good for first in the NFL. What’s not good, the number of penalties. In 2018, Garrett was the most penalized defensive lineman in the league. He continues that trend this season, where he had two roughing the passer and two offside calls in Week 2.

Unfortunately, penalties are going to hold Garrett back. He’ll be under a lot more scrutiny from the refs. They’ll watch him a lot more closely. And the flag issues might prevent him from truly garnering defensive player of year honors, although, with this kind of production, it’ll be hard to justify penalties as a cause for that.

The penalties are a result of Myles Garrett being a bit overzealous. He’s so amped and ready to go that things get away from him. There’s still no stopping him. So far, nobody has been able to contain Garrett. He’s a freak athlete, one that is still getting better every game.

If it weren’t for Garrett, the Browns defense wouldn’t have been near as effective agaisnt the Jets. And without him against the Titans, the score might have been much worse. He’s been worth the top overall pick, and there’s no questioning that. Some might call Garrett the best defensive player in the NFL right now.

It’s not farfetched to think of Garrett as the leagues best defensive player. He’s probably going to lead the NFL in sacks, and will be doing so on a playoff team. While he might not have the name value of J.J. Watt or Aaron Donald as of yet, that’s only going to come with time. And with the attention the Browns get from media, Myles Garrett will be front and center of the hype train.

Despite the issue of penalties, Myles Garrett is a perfect player. There aren’t many who can say that. He’s got all the intangibles to be one of the best defensive lineman of all-time. Judging by the early results this season, he might get his first defensive player of the year award. A great first step on the way to Canton.
