NBA Rumors: Phoenix Suns Making A Move For Kyle Lowry?

The Phoenix Suns are desperately looking to upgrade their roster this offseason. With the No. 1 pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, they selected  Deandre Ayton in hopes he will be their franchise player in the post. Their next move was signing SF Trevor Ariza which leaves many to wonder what the next step is. Could Kyle Lowry be on their radar?

With the Phoenix Suns making Elfrid Payton a free agent, the team is in dire need of a floor general. While they still have Devin Booker, the Suns are super loaded at the SG position but thin at PG. Brandon Knight is still on the roster, the Suns are in a position to offer a good package to the Toronto Raptors for their All-Star guard.

It would seem crazy for the Raptors to make this move but in reality, it may be time to move on from either Kyle Lowry or DeMar DeRozan. The Suns are one of the few teams who have the cap and bodies to get this deal done. By moving Lowry, the Raptors could take on Brandon Knight, Tyson Chandler, Jared Dudley, and a first-round draft pick. The Phoenix Suns would receive Lowry and a draft pick. Seems like a lopsided trade but it’s not.

Is Kyle Lowry A Good Fit For The Phoenix Suns?

Chris Humphreys-USA TODAY Sports

When healthy, Knight is the same player that Lowry is. And it’s time that both teams rid themselves of players they no longer want (Knight and Chandler) and players (Lowry) then can no longer trust. For the Raptors, this is a move that must happen. Kyle Lowry is being paid $33 million per to flake out every year during the playoffs. While he and DeRozan, when on, are one of the best backcourts in the NBA, they have nothing to show for it but a fired Coach of the Year and bragging rights in the rebuilding Atlantic Division. Something has to change.

While more Raptors fans will balk at the mention of Brandon Knight, please remember, before his injuries and being sent to the doghouse, he did average 19.6 points and 5.2 assists while shooting 41 percent from the floor. A move for Kyle Lowry will give the Suns a general they have lacked since Knight and Eric Bledsoe ran the show. Last season, Lowry averaged 16.2 points and 6.9 assists while shooting 43 percent from the floor.

The only reason I believe the Suns will try to make a push for Lowry is that they are making moves with the Ariza deal to position themselves to make a run for the playoffs. The pieces are there with Booker, Josh Jackson, Dragan Bender, and T.J. Warren.

With Kyle Lowry, the Phoenix Suns will play the game at a faster pace with better floor spacing which will allow their athletics wings to do damage. But this all depends on how serious the Suns are about winning and how serious the Raptors are about moving in a new direction.
