Netflix: The Good and The Bad Of That 90s Show
That 70s Show is back, well, sort of. With the most recent of reboots, Netflix has brought back one of the funnier sitcoms to ever grace our television. The only question for skeptics is: Can That 90s Show live up to the original and is it any good? After all, they’ve tried a series of this nature before with That 80s Show and it didn’t have quite the appeal. The difference between the two, That 90s Show is bringing back some of the original cast, whereas That 80s Show was a whole different set of characters.
So let’s get into it, is That 90s Show worthy of the original? Ehhh it’s honestly too early to tell. The biggest problem with the show right now is the actors and on-screen chemistry. One of the downsides of the newer cast is they’re starting at such a young age. It’s going to take them some time to develop the same on-screen chemistry that the original cast did over the years. The only problem with that is Netflix is quick to pull the plug on shows that don’t hit a home run right away.

But isn’t the original cast returning? Yes, but only partially. Think Fuller House. Just like Danny, Uncle Jessie, and Uncle Joey would show up sporadically on that show, Eric, Donna, Kelso, and Jackie all show up at different points in separate episodes. It’s a bit of nostalgia that hopes to hold the show over until the main cast can develop. The only two that appear consistently is Red and Kitty as the grandparents who Leia is staying with for the summer.
While That 90s Show isn’t terrible, it does have a few hurdles to overcome. At times the cast doesn’t seem as natural as you’d hope and the chemistry isn’t quite there. There are even moments that resemble more of a Disney Channel programming than a true sitcom feel. With that being said, there have been a few moments that were full-on laughs instead of minor chuckles. If given a longer leash the show has an opportunity to be successful. Netflix just has to let it last long enough that the younger actors/actresses can come out of their shells a little more.
