New Orleans Saints: Is Bridgewater the odd man out?
Teddy Bridgewater yet again finds himself in a situation where a team needs to decide between him and two other quarterbacks. Back in 2017, Bridgewater and fellow teammates Case Keenum and Sam Bradford all played for the Vikings. Each played well in their short time with the team but due to an injury, Bridgewater fell further down the depth chart. Fast forward to 2020 and he’s in the exact same position this time with the New Orleans Saints.
The Saints are coming off of a 13-3 season in which Bridgewater stepped in and went 5-0 in a fill-in role for injured Drew Brees. One would think that in his short success it would cause the Saints to consider long and hard him being the future of the franchise. However, that might not be the case.

Taysom Hill has been making waves so far this offseason and throwing big accusations around. As it stands he’s already said he believes he’s a franchise quarterback ready to take the reigns. Unfortunately for him, it looks like the future Hall of Fame quarterback, Drew Brees, will be back with the team again this year at the age of 41. The Saints might see his potential as well as head coach Sean Payton has hinted towards the team putting a first round tender on the restricted free agent. From there, the Saints would have to match any offer to Hill or the team that signs him will have to surrender their first round pick. This doesn’t sound like a move that says the New Orleans Saints are willing to let Taysom Hill go without a fight, a strong indicator that Bridgewater won’t be back.
If anything, this may be a dumb move by the Saints. If Brees comes back and they don’t match the offer for Hill, they could be left without a backup who has to start with the team from square one. If Bridgewater was smart, he’d be on the first train out of there to a team that offers him a starting role. For the Saints to put more emphasis on Taysom Hill despite Bridgewater going 5-0 and despite being a younger player, then he’s fighting for value with a team where he’s the backup option to a team he’s already a backup on.
If the Saints don’t match the offer and let Hill walk for a first round pick, why would Bridgewater stick around a team he was valued as the third best option. No matter what happens in the offseason, it would be wise for Teddy Bridgewater and the New Orleans Saints to part ways.
