New Orleans Saints: Offseason Panic Mode 2021 Edition

Saints Drew Brees

The New Orleans Saints finished the season much like they always do. A playoff appearance, but a disappointing postseason. With plenty to do this offseason, can the New Orleans Saints avoid panic mode for 2021?

Post Brees Life

Drew Brees without a doubt is a future Hall of Fame quarterback. The problem is, the Saints have done little to prepare for life after Brees. Yes, they have Jameis Winston, Trevor Siemian, and Taysom Hill but those are big shoes to fill. They also have plenty of young playmakers and will need all the wheels moving for this thing to work. The Saints got by while Brees was out, but the explosiveness wasn’t quite there. They’ll need a top-tier replacement and soon.

Cap or No Cap

While they’ve creatively freed up a ton of space so far, they still have a long way to go. New Orleans is still in the bottom third of the league and they’ll need upgrades, draft signings, and camp replacements down the road. They’re not out of the woods yet and they still need to make moves that keep them competitive with a tough division.

Is Winston the Right Move?

It seems, for now, Jameis Winston is the guy going forward for the Saints. While he had a troubled career in Tampa Bay, moving to a division rival might have help. His biggest red flag is his struggles despite being tutored by the constantly professional Ryan Fitzpatrick and HoF’er Drew Brees. Those two alone should have given enough knowledge to Winston to start his own franchise. If the Saints don’t have a backup plan should he struggle, you have to question coaching going forward?

Some Talent Isn’t Enough

While the Saints do have plenty of young talent to make plays for the offense, they could use more. Stocking up on playmakers who can take advantage of every opportunity needs to be the focus of this draft. Yes, they need the trench players as well, but they’ll need to have enough players who can spread the field. With the division as tough as it is, they’ll need to attack and overload defenses. Depth and explosiveness are their priority.

The New Orleans Saints might be panicking after losing a once-in-a-lifetime player like Drew Brees, but they’re not completely void of talent. If they can find bargains and steals this draft they can still compete for the division. Gambling is not something they can afford to do this offseason.
