New York Giants: How Odell Beckham Jr Re-signing Both Helps and Hurts Them

The New York Giants head into their final preseason game this week against the New England Patriots. They were able to accomplish something that should help them in the regular season. It was reported through several media outlets that the New York Giants and Wide Receiver Odell Beckham Jr. have agreed on a new deal. The deal that was agreed on is a 5-year, $95 million deal. However, it’s worth noting that $41 million of it is guaranteed.

This deal will help and hurt the Giants in the long haul. One way that it helps the Giants is that they will now have a playmaker that defenses will need to zero in on. When you look at the recent history of the Giants, you could make the argument that Tiki Barber was the team’s last playmaker. Knowing that he will be apart of the future, you now have a ton of speed on this team. A lot of speed makes for a more dangerous offense. If you throw him and Barkley together, it will be tough for defenses to shut this team’s offense down. Indeed, there are some good points to Odell Beckham re-signing with the Giants. There are also some ways that this hurts the team.

To illustrate, it’s commonly known that Eli Manning has, at best, 2-3 more seasons left. Unless Davis Webb or Kyle Lauletta can hone their craft and become better than a backup, the Giants are screwed. Furthermore, they will need to get the successor to Eli Manning in either a future draft or free agency. If they end up going the free agency route, they won’t be able to pay a lot for a QB. Therefore I go back to what I said back in April when I said the Giants should have taken one of the four QB’s. Yes, picking up Saquan Barkley was great. However, picking up either a Sam Darnold, Josh Allen, or Josh Rosen would have ensured the future of the QB position. One of those guys could have easily been the successor to Eli Manning.
