New York Giants: There Is Still Hope to the 2018 Season
It was an odd week 5 for the NFC East. The Washington Redskins, Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles, and New York Giants all lost on Sunday. While the Redskins still hold a one-game lead in the loss column, there is now a three-way tie for first place between the Redskins, Cowboys, and Eagles. While the New York Giants sit in last place at 1-4, there is still hope and time to turn the season around. It takes a few adjustments and a few wins, and the Giants could be talking about a possible playoff run.
For starters, they need to defeat the Eagles on Thursday Night. The New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles are set to battle for the first time in 2018 on Thursday night. The two teams have not faced each other since the Eagles defeated the Giants in Week 17 by the score of 34-29. For the Giants to get this done, they need to run the ball more. The Eagles have averaged 110.8 rushing yards per game so far. On the other hand, the Giants have only averaged around 75 yards.
To win the NFC East, then Pat Shurmur and company need to let Saquon Barkley run the ball. More importantly, they need to stop making the costly mistakes on both sides of the ball. In the Carolina game, we saw too many times where the Giants made boneheaded moves. The Giants also need to allow Odell Beckham Jr to get more action. It seems that he has been a non-factor in the first couple of weeks of the seasons.
The biggest thing the New York Giants need to do if they want to salvage the 2018 season is light a fire under the ass of the offensive line. They are still making moves that essentially put Eli Manning in the line of getting sacked. Now that Ereck Flowers isn’t on the team anymore, this should help rebuild some of the confidence.
It’s also worth noting that the Giants are getting to the point of their schedule where they have a ton of winnable games. After Philadelphia, they play the Falcons and Redskins before the bye in Week 9. Those two teams have a combined record of 3-6 which should mean the Giants could still go into the bye week at .500. This will help them much when they enter the 2nd half of the season.
I still have hope to this season. Since there are so many weapons on this offense between Beckham, Engram, Barkley, Sheppard, and Eli; the sky is the limit.
