New York Giants: What About Jadeveon Clowney?

The New York Giants must find a pass rusher. Last season, the D-Line registered 36 sacks and in a division where QBs rule (except Washington). The Giants must improve on getting pressure on the quarterback. With Jadeveon Clowney available and possibly looking to escape the Seattle Seahawks, it would be wise to get the one-time defensive force. Injuries have derailed a once-promising career but Clowney can still be productive.

While with the Seahawks in 2019, Clowney registered 31 tackles and three sacks. It may be hard prying him away from the Seahawks or any other contender but the Giants do have the money and feel that they’re building something special there. The age-old motto is that defense wins championships and Dave Gettleman has been a mastermind in doing so dating back to his time with the Carolina Panthers. Can lightning strike twice?

With the New York Giants going young on the offensive side, they’re heading in that same direction with the defense. Bringing in Clowney is not that much of a reach as he’s only 27. This fits right into the age plans that Gettleman has. The one issue here may be the money.

Over the years, Gettleman has been known to shy away from the big contracts. Just ask Steve Smith, DeAngelo Williams, and Julius Peppers formerly of the Carolina Panthers who was forced to sign elsewhere. Then he came to NY and it appeared he had a change of heart when he inked Odell Beckham to a new deal only to turn around and trade him.

So, while Gettleman may want to upgrade the defense, there is no way he’s willing to pay the Market Value of Clowney which, according to Spotrac is $20M per year. This is not the Gettleman way.

The rest of the NFC East is making moves and spending money while doing so. If the Giants are to make a splash, why not let it be on the defensive side of the ball where they surrendered 377 yards per game.
