New York Jets: They can not screw up this head coach search

The New York Jets are one of several teams looking to make 2019 a promising season. One thing they need to do is hire the right head coach. Some of the names they have been interviewing include former Miami Dolphins coach Adam Gase, former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy, USC OC Kliff Kingsbury, Kansas City Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy. Being that the team has $100 million to spend in salary and a possible franchise quarterback in Sam Darnold, they can’t screw this move up.

The last head coach on the New York Jets that was not a rookie head coach was Bill Parcells. He was apart of this team from 1997-1999.  They have had six coaches since then. They have included Todd Bowles, Eric Mangini, Herm Edwards, Rex Ryan, Al Groh, and Bill Belichick. It is worth noting that Bill Belichick was with the Jets for only a day. The biggest thing that Todd Bowles, Eric Mangini, Herm Edwards, Rex Ryan, and Al Groh were not head coaches before they took on the Jets job. In that time span, the Jets have had only a few playoff appearances. If the Jets want to not be looked at like a joke, then they hire the right coach.

Two big things they should look at is someone who can handle the New York media and lights a fire under the ass of the team. With who they have interviewed, I would knock off three names right off with the criteria I laid out. Kingsbury and Bieniemy have been head coaches in the NFL. I know Bieniemy is currently the offensive coordinator of the Chiefs but being a head coach is not like being an offensive coordinator. You can also take off Adam Gase. In two seasons with the Miami Dolphins, Adam Gase went 23-25 and had one playoff appearance.

By process of elimination, Mike McCarthy would be the one who would fit. He has been a head coach beforehand for starters. In addition, he knows what it takes to win as he has won a Super Bowl. You also need someone who can mold Sam Darnold, Mike McCarthy would be able to do that. However, my only concern is can he handle the media. While he was a head coach of the Green Bay Packers, he had a tough time dealing with the media. I’m curious to see if he can handle the New York media.
