New York Mets: Who should get credit for the early success?
We may only be ten games into the MLB season, but there’s one team in the National League that is playing at another level. As of today, the New York Mets own the best record in the National League and are tied with the Boston Red Sox for the best record in baseball. While they have had to deal with rather small injuries, they are still continuing ways to win. They have series wins over the St. Louis Cardinals and Washington Nationals.
There are a few different areas that are clicking and that’s why the Mets have played well with so much fire out of the gate. For starters, the hitters are in a grove. Before the season began, the Mets lineup had a bit of an expectation to shine with players like Yoesnis Cespedes and Jay Bruce. However, where this lineup differs is that you are getting hits from spots one to nine in the lineup. It’s worth mentioning that some guys don’t have home runs like Rosario, but they are contributing in other ways.
The biggest spark in this lineup is not from someone who is a big star. Shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera has been lighting it up early in Queens. In 38 plate appearances, he has one home run and three RBI that equals to a batting average of .324. He also has 12 hits as well. While he may not be getting the long ball every time up, he is getting on base in some sort of fashion.
While the hitting has done its job, I would be remised without giving some credit to the pitching staff. Since this pitching staff has been together, it has not been able to show its full ability because of injuries.
Just look at what Jacob DeGrom and Noah Syndergaard have done and you can see the Mets version of when the Arizona Diamondbacks had Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling. While they may not have the numbers that those two produced, they are the focal points in the rotation. Overall, the pitching staff has been great for the Mets.
I know its early, but if this is any foreshadowing into the season, then it will be a fun season in Queens.
