New York Mets: Jacob deGrom is having a historical season; For the Good and the Bad

New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom is having a phenomenal year. In 20 starts, he has a 5-5 record with a 1.71 ERA and 159 Strikeouts. Throughout 2018, he continues to be the workhorse for a Mets pitching staff ranked 19th. While he continues to put out stellar starts every time, the Mets seem to reward him by not providing any runs. Realistically, he should have more than 14 wins at this point of the season.  It’s been a historic year in a good way for Jacob deGrom, it’s also been a historically bad year as well.

Matt Eisenberg and Danny Abriano of SNY put out an article on deGrom to show what he is on pace for. They talk about he is on pace this season to pitch over 200 innings, have a sub 2.00 ERA, and have less than nine wins. He should be in line for the Cy Yong with the year that he is having, and he doesn’t have the wins to back it up. The last time a Mets pitcher had the lowest ERA in the National League was back in the early 1970’s. In 1970, 1971, and 1973; Tom Seaver would end up leading the National League in ERA. The biggest difference between those seasons and the one that deGrom is having this season is that Seaver had the wins to back it up.

In those seasons, Seaver had 18, 20, and 19 wins. At the rate that Jacob deGrom is going, he won’t ever see those numbers this season. It is truly sad what the New York Mets are doing to Jacob deGrom. They are destroying any shot to give this kid a shot. He is still in the prime of his career, but he won’t achieve where he should be because he is on a team that doesn’t provide any run support. A move for Jacob deGrom should benefit him for the long haul.
