New York Mets: On the verge of making history with the ROY, MVP, and CY Young awards
The 2019 season for the New York Mets has been a disappointing one. They have now missed the playoffs for the last three years after making it to the World Series in 2015 and the NL Wild Card game in 2016. However with the season winding down, the awards talk has gotten hot. After the playoffs end, we will find out who will be taking home the Rookie of the Year, Cy Young, MVP, and Manager of the Year are the biggest ones. If the Mets were to make the playoffs, I’d put Mickey Calloway into the discussion of MOY.
However, you still have Rookie of the Year, Cy Young, and MVP. When it comes to the Rookie of the Year, it’s a no-brainier that Pete Alonso should win it. After tonight’s game, he has a .260 batting average with 53 home runs and 120 runs batted in. If he is able to get more runs batted in, he may be able to join a exclusive class. There have been six players who have over 120 RBIs in their rookie season. Some of those names in that list were Ted Williams who drove in 145 runs batted in in 1939. We also saw Joe DiMaggio drive in 125 runs batted in during the 1936 season. Right now, it’s a one man race.
For a while, the only other person who could have given Alonso a run for his money was San Diego Padres outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. However, he was placed on the sixty day injured list in August. Jacob DeGrom was the last Mets player to win the Rookie of the Year in 2014. While Alonso is a shoo in for the NL Rookie of the Year, there’s a decent chance that he could also be bringing home another major award. There’s been a lot of talk that he could be in the running of NL MVP award.
Fred Lynn and Ichiro Suzki are the only two players to win both the Rookie of the Year and the MVP. Unfortunately, this is the one award that could be a longshot, but possible. Some of the names mentioned in the NL MVP talk are Los Angeles Dodgers Cody Bellinger, Milwaukee Brewers Christian Yelich, Washington Nationals Anthony Rendon, Atlanta Braves Ronald Acuna Jr, and Pete Alonso. Out of the three races, this is the tightest one because any of those guys could win it. This will be the one to look at closest.
The National League CY Young Award is also interesting. It seems that Jacob DeGrom will probably win the award after his start in Miami a few days ago. If Jacob DeGrom does win, he will make history as being the second New York Mets pitcher to win more than one CY Young Award. The other one was Tom Seaver, who won the award in 1969, 1973, and 1975. Jacob DeGrom would also make another bit of history if he wins the CY Young Award. He would become the first Mets pitcher to win the award back to back years.
If Pete Alonso and Jacob DeGrom do win the Rookie of the Year, CY Young, and MVP; the Mets as a team would make history. They would be the first team to win all three of those awards in one year. This almost happened in 2014 when Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers won the NL MVP and NL Cy Young. The 2014 NL Rookie of the Year went to Jacob DeGrom. This would be remarkable when you think throughout the history of baseball. Go back to the years that the Atlanta Braves and New York Yankees were the talk. They never pulled this off.
Let us know in the comments who you would like to see win the 2019 MLB awards.
