New York Mets: With Steven Matz Having Problems, It May Be Time To Sign Jake Arrieta

We are in the thick of Spring Training. One of the bigger concerns coming out of New York Mets’ camp is the rocky start of Steven Matz. In two starts, he has a 0-2 record, an ERA of 54.00, and has only pitched 1.2 innings. I know that pitchers tend to not have long outings during Spring Training, but those are terrible numbers. If he continues to not perform, then Mets manager Mickey Callaway may have no option but to replace him in the rotation for the season.

As of now, it seems that the Mets 2018 rotation will look something like this. You will have Jacob DeGrom, Noah Syndergaard, Matt Harvey, and Jason Vargas for certain. The fifth spot in the rotation is up for grabs and it may not go to Matz. In all honesty, it shouldn’t if he continues to pitch the way he has. Let us also not forget that you have guys like Robert Gsellman, Seth Lugo, and Zach Wheeler who can all take that final spot. While Gsellman and Lugo don’t scare most lineups, they are reliable guys. Since the Mets have a major hole at the end of their rotation, it may be time to possibly go out and sign one of the free agent pitchers.

Should The New York Mets Sign Jake Arrieta?

In the last several weeks, there have been several sports hosts who have said that the Mets should go after Jake Arrieta. While it may be a pipedream, it is not out of the question. If the Mets are able to sign him, then it will make them contenders in a rather weak National League East. Due to the fact he has been a free agent for a long time, he could be desperate to sign already. This is a guy who is very reliable as he had made roughly 30 starts in the last three years. By adding him, you can drop Vargas down to the five-spot and put him in at the number 3 spot. Matt Harvey as a fourth starter isn’t bad.

If the Mets can sign Arrieta to a one to two-year deal, then I would go for it if I were the Mets.
