New York Yankees: Could the signing of Gerrit Cole help the team make it to the World Series?
As of this writing, MLB is having their annual Winter Meetings in San Diego. In the early days, we have seen a few moves take place. The most noticeable one was Stephen Strasburg resigning with the Washington Nationals. According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, the deal is a seven year deal worth $245 million dollars. David Price of the Boston Red Sox was the one who had the previous high contract for a pitcher. In addition, Strasburg also has the highest annual average value. The previous holder of this Zack Greinke who was making $31.5 million dollars per season. However, it seems Strasburg may not be the highest paid pitcher much longer.
The other big name in the pitching market is former Houston Astros pitcher, Gerrit Cole. Last season was by far the best year in the seven-year career of Gerrit Cole. In 33 games, he would go 20-5 and have an ERA of 2.50. Cole was in Houston for two seasons and had an amazing resurgence. He would have a 35-10 and have an era of 5.38. The ERA would end up averaging to 2.69. Due to how well he has been, he is getting a nice payday with whatever team signs him. According to sources at the Winter Meetings, the teams who have the most interest in Cole are the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Angels, New York Yankees, and a mystery team. Right now, the only known offer comes from the New York Yankees.
Reports are saying that the offer was a seven-year deal that would be worth $245 million dollars. But the expectation is that Cole will more than likely ink a deal that would be in the $300 million dollar area and up. The feeling is that the Yankees will more than likely be the ones to sign him, due to how invested they are in him.The Yankees would benefit greatly with signing him. One of the biggest problems that has faced the Yankees in recent memory is their pitching. In the last two years, the Yankees were beaten in the playoffs by a team that had better pitching.
By signing Cole, you are also more than likely going to have a true ace for the foreseeable future. It’s been a while since the Yankees had a true ace pitcher.
