New York Yankees: Pitching needs to be the #1 priority at trade deadline

We are a few weeks away from the MLB Trade Deadline. One of the teams that are expected to be major buyers is the New York Yankees. Despite holding a record of 61-31, the Yankees feel they need to add a few pieces to get them another World Series ring. It’s been talked about for the last week or so that they are very interested in Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado. While he would be a nice addition to a lineup that has a ton of power, I don’t feel it should be their top priority. In order to compete in the American League with the Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox, you need pitching.

One of the names being thrown around for the New York Yankees is J.A. Happ of the Toronto Blue Jays. Happ has a record of 10-6 with a 4.29 ERA. He is serviceable and will come in handy when the Yankees still play the Red Sox. During the 2018 season, Happ has a 0.84 ERA and has one win over them. In addition, and I feel the biggest part is that Red Sox hitters have a .156 batting average when facing Happ. If you’re the Yankees, your goal at this point of the season is to take down the Red Sox, while winning your other games. The Red Sox don’t ever seem to lose and it’s making not easy for the Yankees.

You can also look at guys like Michael Fulmer of the Detroit Tigers or Zack Wheeler of the New York Mets. What the Yankees need is a pitcher who is serviceable and can help the rotation. I’m not taking anything from them going after Machado, but I would focus my attention on pitching for the Yankees heading into July 31st trade deadline.
