NFL: 5 Teams Who Shouldn’t Turn to Odell Beckham Jr.

NFL free agent Odell Beckham Jr

With the news that the Cleveland Browns and Odell Beckham Jr. are parting ways, there’s a whole slew of NFL fans calling for each of their respective teams to sign the wide receiver. There are plenty of teams who could use a star at wide receiver, but there’s a larger number of teams who don’t need to poke around for jersey sales.

Philadelphia Eagles

Sitting eighth in waiver priority, the Eagles could claim OBJ if they wanted to. They’ve become a run-first team, especially after the clinic they put on against the Detroit Lions. While they’re sitting towards the top in cap space as well, their struggles this season won’t be fixed by adding a demanding player. If they’re truly investing in Jalen Hurts, they don’t need the distraction when their star WR isn’t getting the ball thrown his way.

Miami Dolphins

With Will Fuller struggling to get back on the field and Devante Parker hitting the IR, Dolphins fans immediately demand a call to action. Surely the Dolphins could use help at WR. However, there’s one big problem. Brian Flores and his regime has built a team of “team-first” players and so far, that’s not Beckham Jr. The same frustrations that came out in New York are the same ones that came out in Cleveland. While they’re pushing Tua Tagovailoa’s development, he’s another young QB that doesn’t need the noise.

Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions need a star player about as much as they need a win. With Jared Goff under center, they have a quarterback who can sling the ball around and have top priority over the rest of the NFL for waiver claims. However, the 0-8 Lions would have to go on one hell of a run to overcome the 7-1 Packers atop their division. Even if they win out, they’d have to hope every wildcard spot in the NFC went on a ridiculous losing streak. They’re not eliminated but the top 4 teams have one loss, then two more have 2 losses. There’s no outcome that gets them back in the hunt with one player.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Another young QB whose team is high on the waiver list and another team that needs to stay away. The Jaguars are too early into a rebuilding season and already had enough media circus to go around. Losing their first-round pick Travis Etienne hurt their progress early on and borrowing a player on the back half of the season provides them no further progress. They need a few big playmakers, but won’t be contenders this season anyway.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs are lower down the NFL waiver priority list but could use a spark. KC has looked nothing like they have the past few years and needs a shift in perspective. However, the problem in Kansas City isn’t the talent, it’s all mental. The 2020 Super Bowl was the first time the Chiefs had a wake-up call in the form of a blowout. Ever since then it’s been mental mistakes and sloppy play. They’re trying to do too much on the field and are forgetting the fundamentals that made them dominant. Their playoff hopes are still intact but they have to clean up their play. Adding OBJ would just complicate things.
