NFL: Best Landing Spots For Cam Newton
The New England Patriots gave a little shock to the 53 man roster cuts when they cut Cam Newton. New England may know something that a lot of other teams don’t. Does Cam still have some use in today’s NFL or are his best days behind him? Here are some teams that should call on the former Patriot:
New York Jets
100% out of the gate, the moment Cam was cut, if I’m the New York Jets, I have his agent on the phone. He’s not going to start, he’s not even going to be asked to compete for a starting spot. He would be a second-string at best and bring veteran leadership to a young team with a new head coach. Not only that, you’d have inside information on a division rival. Top it all off with the fact the Jets don’t have a strong backup plan in place if Wilson either struggles or gets hurt, and Cam Newton should be on their call list.
Washington Football Team
It’s quite clear that the newly appointed “Football Team” needed veteran leadership when they signed Ryan Fitzpatrick instead of rolling with Taylor Heinicke as they did in the playoffs. Even if they decide that one of those two is their future, they still need to establish a playing style that fits head coach Ron Rivera’s game. Insert the QB who was a staple of Rivera’s success in Carolina, and it seems like the NFL playbook writes itself. Yes, Fitzpatrick is a constant professional and a better option to lead the team, but Newton’s familiarity could bring the team up to speed as well as transition him to a potential coaching role if he’s got nothing left in the tank.

Carolina Panthers
No one is saying Sam Darnold won’t be successful with the Panthers, but he hasn’t shown enough to say that he will. With that being said, Cam has to be signed at a low-cost deal after being cut by the team that gave him a second chance. He might not have the strength and potential he once did, but for all he did for the organization, it would be respectable to bring him on in case Darnold struggles still.
Seattle Seahawks
Russell Wilson isn’t going anywhere, but the Seattle QB has taken his lumps over the years in the NFL. With a similar play style, it wouldn’t be hard to sub in Newton late in games in relief of Wilson. It also wouldn’t hurt to bring in a quarterback to take some of the pressure of going out and playing hurt off of Wilson.
Kansas City Chiefs
Another situation where the QB could use a break late in games. Patrick Mahomes does big things in games and the Chiefs can put up points in bunches. Why keep trotting him out there late in games when they could potentially be up 21+ points. Cam can go in late in games, be the backup, give Mahomes that rest and keep the offense flowing. Why beat the legs off of your running backs by constantly trying to burn the clock with run after run. The Chiefs don’t even have a backup that runs a similar offense. Chad Henne isn’t the same style quarterback as Mahomes so if you put him in you have to change the offense completely.
Cam Newton might not be the quarterback he once was, but that’s not to say he’s done in today’s NFL. Who will be the first caller to sign the veteran QB?
