NFL: Coaching Vacancies and Who Should Fill Them
The NFL has a slew of unemployed coaches at the end of each season and 2022 is no different. As of now there are 7 vacancies and while some are more appealing than others, there are plenty of good coaches out there.
Chicago Bears – Brian Flores
Flores is the guy responsible for a big defense down in Miami. While his record didn’t show it, the Dolphins were improving. He should be a hot commodity for teams looking for an identity on one side of the ball before a complete rebuild. Flores will go in with a young quarterback in place and the Bears have pride in defenses. If Chicago wants to rebuild their system starting with defense, then Flores is their man.
Miami Dolphins – Eric Bieniemy
The Dolphins have a top defense in place. If they want to get over the hump of 9-10 win seasons they need to find a way to balance their offensive attack. Bieniemy has shown tremendous talent working with Patrick Mahomes and that all-star offense. Putting together a good scheme with the talent already in place and most cap space going into the offseason could change Miami’s fortunes.
Minnesota Vikings – Vance Joseph
Minnesota is another team that prides themselves on good defensive schemes. Joseph knows defense just as well as the rest and can take this team to the next level. The draft class isn’t too hot with potential stars but if he can find a quarterback to develop while Kirk Cousins is still in-house then he can buy time to focus the rest on defense. To put of drafting a quarterback until next year, the Vikings and Joseph would be a great fit.

New York Giants – Patrick Graham
The Giants needed to hit the reset button but they don’t have to look far for a replacement. Now that Joe Judge is gone, the real work can begin. Graham’s defense was one of the main reasons the Giants were competitive in 2021. If he can find a way to get creative with the offense the way they did on defense, New York won’t have to swing for the fences to pay their next HC.
Las Vegas Raiders – Josh McDaniels
With his history in New England, he’s been a part of an organization with talent on both sides of the football. He’s seen what it takes to build a complete team as well as winning championships. He’s had HC experience in the NFL and despite his struggle in Denver, he’ll more than likely be interviewed multiple times this cycle. Las Vegas has pieces in place on both sides of the football and a big name to follow Gruden will be their goal.
Jacksonville Jaguars – Jim Harbaugh
Jacksonville is probably the best landing spot for any coach around the league right now. They have a first-round quarterback who found ways to win games last year in Trevor Lawrence. Unlike the usual first-round picks that are later labeled busts, Lawrence showed promise. They have Travis Etienne coming back next year and James Robinson for a 1-2 punch. They also have a first-round pick, first overall this year. If ever there’s a way to lure Harbaugh back to the NFL, that’s a pretty good start.
Denver Broncos – Brian Daboll
It wouldn’t surprise me for Denver to go after an offensive-minded HC. Daboll would come from a Bills organization that took Josh Allen and made him a top-tier quarterback. Their offense is one of the main reasons they’ve been in the playoffs in back-to-back seasons for the first time in a while. Daboll would come into a similar situation in Denver, and be no stranger to the struggles of a cold-weather home field. Daboll would be the guy to get their offense out of neutral.
