NFL: If the Giants go less than 5-11, Pat Shurmur needs to be fired

New York Giants

Since the New York Giants fired Tom Coughlin following the 2015 season, they have become a joke. In three seasons, they have gone through three head coaches. This includes Ben McAdoo, Steve Spagnuolo, and Pat Shurmur currently. If we take out McAdoo’s first season when they went 11-5 and lost in the Wild Card game to the Green Bay Packers, they have failed to win six games. In 2017, they went 3-13 and went 5-11 last year.

While the season is still weeks away from starting, there isn’t a ton of hope surrounding the Giants. It seemed that they didn’t make any major splash during the off-season, saw Odell Beckham Jr get dealt to the Browns, and they took one of the worst first round picks in Daniel Jones. In the first few days of camp opening, two wide receivers are already injured. Corey Coleman tore his ACL and Sterling Sheppard broke his left thumb. They expect Sheppard to be back soon. With a wide receivers core injury brittle, to an offensive line that is still bad, to an aging QB in Eli Manning; the 2019 season is not looking positive at all for the Giants.

The early part of their schedule looks favorable for one big reason. From the opening game to when they play the New England Patriots, only three of those games are against a winning team from last season. Dallas Cowboys, Minnesota Vikings, and the New England Patriots are the three teams. They can not play down to their competition and head into their second half with a winning record.

If I were John Mara and Steve Tisch, I would have a short leash put on Shumur. The Giants can not afford to go less than 5-11. If they head into the Week 10 match up against the Jets are anything less than 5-5, I would fire Pat Shurmur during the bye week. In addition, if Eli Manning is playing bad, I would bench him for Daniel Jones. However, I wouldn’t go back to Eli Manning. This season is the last shot they have to not become the new Cleveland Browns of the early 2000’s.
