NFL: The Jets released Brandon Marshall and are set to release more

It seems that the New York Jets are really set to have a new roster for the 2017 season. Over the last few weeks, they have released several notable players. Player such as Ryan Fitzpatrick, Darrelle Revis, Nick Mangold, Nick Folk, and Brandon Marshall. However, it seems that they are not done cleaning house.

Before I get to the other rumored names to possible be losing their jobs with the Jets, I would like to make a point on the release of Brandon Marshall. It was announced a few days ago that the Jets were going to release the veteran wide receiver. His stint with the team lasted only two years. He was brought to the Jets via trade during the 2015 offseason from the Chicago Bears. The trade saw the Jets sent the Bears a fifth-round  and seventh round pick for Brandon Marshall.

While he was set to make roughly $7.5 million in the 2017 season, the Jets were able to wipe that completely off their salary cap. It should be noted that although Marshall is turning 33 later this month. His skill hasn’t declined and will more than likely have plenty of teams interested in him. One of the teams who has expressed interest in Marshall is the Patriots, but it would be interesting to see if that actually happens as Marshall has made comments about the future Hall of Famer Tom Brady and Belichick that could lead him not going there.

While many people thought this was it for the Jets as far as parting ways with players, apparently the feeling is that they are set to part ways with more players leading up to start of free agency. According to Rich Cimini, he is hearing that the Jets are now considering to part ways with as many as five more players. Apparently, the five players are Marcus Gilchrist, Calvin Pryor, Eric Decker, Buster Skrine, and Sheldon Richardson.

The feeling is we could see Pryor and Richardson both traded soon. It will be interesting to see what they can get back for veterans. Also, it should be worth noting that as of this writing that David Harris is safe, for now. The only way the Jets would part ways with him is if they sign a free agent at linebacker.

My hunch by what the Jets are doing is they are getting rid of pretty much everyone and are giving Todd Bowles a brand new roster. I guess they want to see what he can do with new people. If the Jets have a bad 2017 season, then Bowles should be fired after the season. I know the Jets have not had continuity at the head coach spot for some time. If they continue to fail, then the Jets will need to head in a different direction once again.

The NFL free agency period begins on March 9. It will be interesting to see what the Jets have up their sleeve and who they bring in. They will more than likely have a lot of cap space to play with during this period. Stay tuned to the Inscriber Magazine as we will keep you up to date on what the Jets and the other 31 other teams do in the free agency period.
