NFL: Le’Veon Bell Will Hurt His Stock by Holding Out
We on the cusp of the 2018 NFL season. In my opinion, one of bigger storylines heading into the season is the situation between the Pittsburgh Steelers and running back Le’Veon Bell. In case you don’t know what is going on, I will bring you up to speed. The Steelers wanted to franchise tag him and he is refusing to accept it. He figures he should be paid much more than the franchise tag. He is set to be a free agent after this upcoming season.
The agent for Le’Veon Bell has come out and said that his client will play for the Steelers, the question is when that will happen. As of now, we know he won’t play in the season opener on Sunday. If he continues to hold out, he will end up losing $853,000 for one week’s worth. This would essentially lead to him losing 1/17th of the $14.5 million he hasn’t signed. If he thinks this will hurt the Steelers, I can safely say that won’t be the case. If you look on at the first five games of the season, the Steelers have a ton of winnable games. Additionally, they have other weapons to lean on when it comes to the offense.
In the end, Le’Veon Bell is only hurting his own stock for free agency. In order to still get a full year’s pay, he will need to sign the contract by the Tuesday after Week 10. When you look at their first ten games, you could make the argument that they can go 7-3 or possibly 8-2. If they can get that without Le’Veon’s help, his stock will go down. In addition, teams won’t pay him a lot because they don’t want the same problem that the Steelers are facing.
Overall, Le’Veon Bell is simply hurting himself and his stock will go down the longer this holdout goes on for.
