NFL: If Patrick Mahomes and Jared Goff win on Sunday, they will cement their legacies
The “final four” of the NFL is set. Next Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs host the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game. On the other side, the Los Angeles Rams and New Orleans Saints are set to collide in the NFC Championship Game. In both games, you have a guaranteed first-ballot Hall of Famers in Tom Brady and Drew Brees. On the other side, you have two quarterbacks in Jared Goff and Patrick Mahomes who are trying to prove themselves. Both obstacles will be tough to overcome, but they are both capable of happening.
Let’s first look at Patrick Mahomes. He is put in this talk because while he is a second-year player in the NFL, this past season was his first one as a starting quarterback. He was the back up to Alex Smith during last season. He is coming into this game with a 1-0 playoff record. His first win came last week when the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Indianapolis Colts, 31-13. In his second playoff game, he will be across the field from one of the games best quarterbacks in Tom Brady. Coming into the game, Tom Brady has a 28-10 record in the playoffs. It’s worth noting that Tom Brady’s last playoff loss came against the Denver Broncos in Denver in the AFC Championship Game in 2013.
On the other hand, Jared Goff is in his third season with the Los Angeles Rams. He also has a record of 1-0 in the playoffs. While Patrick Mahomes is hosting Tom Brady, Jared Goff will be leading the Rams into New Orleans. It’s worth noting that since Drew Brees has been with the Saints, they have never lost a playoff game they hosted in the Superdome and only lost on the road in the postseason.
When you look at both games, Goff has the tougher obstacle to get to the Super Bowl. I’m not taking away anything from the AFC side, but the Saints almost never lose in the playoffs at home. If both or either guy are able to win on Sunday, they will cement themselves as one of the games top quarterbacks.
