NFL: Pre-Combine Mock Draft 1.0

Mike Mayock

2019 NFL Scouting Combine

With the NFL Scouting Combine getting underway on Friday, March 1; here is my first one round mock draft for 2019.

First of all, I would like to say shout out to TDN (The Draft Network) for making an excellent mock draft simulator that I used it to sort out this 1st round mock draft and put it together.

I will talk only about the 1st, 6th, 12th, 16th, 21st, 26th, and 31st pick in some detail ( future mock drafts will talk about a different set of picks if a pick changes). With that being said, the Arizona Cardinals are on the clock with the 1st overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Pick 1- Arizona Cardinals: Nick Bosa (EDGE) Ohio State

The Cardinals need to draft the best defensive player, at a premium position, in Ohio State edge rusher Nick Bosa. Even though they already have Chandler Jones, new defensive coordinator Vance Joseph thrives off having many pass rushers in his system (ex. when he was with the Denver Broncos; they drafted Bradley Chubb last year with Von Miller, Shaquil Barrett, and Shane Ray already on the roster). New head coach Kliff Kingsbury should pounce on the opportunity to get Bosa as he shows a rare combination of everything you look for in a high impact edge rusher that can be game-changing for any NFL defense (despite the lack of career production due to injury).

Pick 6- New York Giants: Cody Ford (OT/ OG) Oklahoma

The more and more I hear GM Dave Gettleman’s sentiments about sticking with Eli Manning, the more I think a quarterback in round 1 may not be the move for 2019 as they might want bigger bodies in the trenches on the offensive line. With the 6th pick, the selection of Oklahoma’s Cody Ford would be a huge one for the Giants offensive line as he can be a good right tackle initially or right guard if his value is better there. Ford has relatively quick feet for his size and stellar technique to hold up in pass protection (as a one-year starter at offensive tackle), but is a nasty mauler in the run game as well; making him very versatile if he gets some refinement at the next level.

Pick 12- Green Bay Packers: Jachai Polite (EDGE) Florida

Over the last couple of years, the duo of Clay Matthew and Nick Perry failed to make a lasting impact on defense as the Green Bay Packers could use a younger pass rusher to pair up with Kyler Fackrell, who broke out last year. With the 12th pick, insert in Florida edge rusher Jachai Polite as he can provide some speed to get after the passer. While he has to work on consistency, Polite makes enough splash plays with the motor and burst/ bend off the line of scrimmage against offensive tackles.

Pick 16- Carolina Panthers: Rashan Gary (DL) Michigan

Michigan defensive lineman Rashan Gary falls here to the Carolina Panthers with the 16th overall pick as the Panthers need pass rush with Julius Peppers retiring. Gary has explosive traits but he could be labeled as a tweener by some as he is better interior defensive lineman rather than an edge rusher. I am not sure his production and consistency warrant a top 5 or 10 selection but a good showing at the NFL Scouting Combine could shoot him up there.

Pick 21- Seattle Seahawks: Montez Sweat (EDGE) Mississippi State

Frank Clark is a pending free agent this year and even if they bring him back, they need more pass rush opposite of him so with the 21st pick; the Seattle Seahawks select Mississippi State edge rusher Montez Sweat. The Seahawks typically look for long athletic pass rushing specialists so if Sweat has a good workout at the NFL Scouting Combine, I could see them taking him. Sweat has good burst, motor, and production to warrant the selection of a raw pass rusher with upside that is tailor-made to be a 4-3 defensive end due to some limitations with his bend.

Pick 26- Indianapolis Colts: A.J. Brown (WR) Ole Miss

The Indianapolis Colts could use another weapon other than T.Y. Hilton for Andrew Luck to throw to and with the 26th overall pick, they could select Ole Miss wide receiver, A.J. Brown. While he sometimes struggles on the outside, he is more suited in the slot as Luck would get a dependable target they need to take their passing game to another level (compared to last year). Brown would give them a physical receiver with some size that can move the chains despite some concerns with his deep speed.

Dexter Lawrence

Pick 31- Los Angeles Rams: Dexter Lawrence (DT) Clemson

With the 31st overall pick, the Los Angeles Rams select Clemson defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence to replace Ndamukong Suh (who is most likely leaving in free agency). With Aaron Donald and Michael Brockers at the 3-4 defensive end spots, getting Lawrence in the middle would help their run defense tremendously. While he may not bring as much pass rush upside one would want, he still could be an instant plug and play starter as a nose tackle.

That wraps up my first mock draft for 2019, covering the first 32 picks of the 1st round. What are your thoughts on your favorite team and their selection in Round 1? I expect a lot of change once free agency rolls around so this is far from the finished product.
