Nick Foles Should Start for the Chicago Bears

Nick Foles

The Chicago Bears need a quarterback who can win football games. Mitch Trubisky has shown promise but hasn’t cemented himself as the long term answer. While the Bears don’t want to give up on him just yet or set his development back, the addition of Nick Foles was designed to push him to be a better quarterback. With that being said, Foles should not be their backup plan, he should be their starter until Trubisky can prove he’s the better option.

While it could be argued that both quarterbacks struggled with consistency, Foles has the edge that Trubisky doesn’t, playoff victories. Not only has Foles been successful in the postseason, but he has also made it to and won the Super Bowl. Even with Carson Wentz in Philadelphia, there were times when it seemed the Eagles offense was responding better with Foles in the starter role. Wentz would go on to retake the reigns, but in their championship run, down the stretch, it became apparent Foles could get it done.

Statistically, the two are pretty close with Foles completing just under 62% of passes in his career, throwing 71 touchdowns to 35 interceptions. In his best season, Foles threw 2800+ yards with 27 touchdowns and just two interceptions with the Eagles. Mitch Trubisky has just over 63% completions with 48 touchdowns and 29 interceptions. His best season was 24 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. However, the Bears quarterback took a step back last season, despite playing an extra game his yards were down and he threw 7 fewer touchdowns. Neither one has distanced themselves from the other statistically in their career.

Trubisky does edge out Foles even in the wins category too, but barely. His 23 wins to 18 losses net him a 56% win percentage. Foles has won 26 to his 22 losses for 54%. All signs point to Mitch Trubisky being their starter as Nick Foles doesn’t blow him away, but if the Bears want to push their young quarterback to the next level he needs to understand his role is about winning when it matters.

In his only playoff appearance, Trubisky barely lost to the same Eagles team by a missed field goal. Foles on the other hand has won 4 of his 6 playoff appearances. Not only winning in the playoffs, winning when it matters should be Mitch Trubisky’s new motto. Winning playoffs, winning big games, winning the starting job when there’s actual competition are all areas the young quarterback needs to show up. If he can’t win when it matters, then. It won’t hurt the Chicago Bears by moving on sooner rather than later.
