Nobody Is A Film Everybody Will Be In Awe Over

I’m often very harsh on movies. I don’t usually give praise if it’s not warranted. When I say that “Nobody” (after one viewing) has a shot at being one of my top-10 films of all-time, that shouldn’t be taken lightly. I know I’m just one person with a very aggressive opinion. Although, I can’t see how anyone would disagree with my take on this action film.

Bob Odenkirk isn’t who I’d think of as an action star. I don’t watch Better Call Saul. Perhaps I’m late to the party. I am, however, an avid coniseour of The Office. And knowing Osenkirk was the original choice to play Micheal Scott, it’s safe to say I did not expect this from him.

I’d liken Nobody to John Wick. They both have very similar styles of action. Let me say, I’m not a big John Wick fan by any means, however, from an action film standpoint, it’s a work of art. I will not disagree with anyone who thinks that. ( and there are a lot of those individuals)

My issue with John Wick has always been Keanu Reeves. He’s, at least in my opinion, a very bland actor. The films were always carried by incredible action. Nobody is a different type of film. I was actually drawn to the main character, unlike John Wick. Also, like Wick, the cartoony and outlandish villain cliche is in play. Once again, it works better here as well.

Taking the action scenes out of the equation, this has a lot more going for it. Everything was just so well put together, the mystique behind Odenkirk’s character, the tactics he used to get ahead, and just an overall great film that didn’t blur the line too greatly of going over the top and what’s real.

Honestly, it was just the little scenes that made this film. Right before the climactic ending, a simple shot of Odenkirk in his car with his fingers crossed at the wheel just sold it for me. Something as simple as that won me over. I won’t give context to the shot to avoid spoilers, but it just really drove home the depth of these characters and the little moments in the film.

Had Nobody been released before John Wick, this would be a genre-defining film. People are going to look at Nobody as a copycat action flick, and that’s so far from what it is. Yes, some things are similar, however, there’s enough newness to make this standout.

We’ve yet to see Black Widow. I really don’t expect that, or anything else, to overtake Nobody as 2021’s best action film. This was one of those pictures you just didn’t see coming a year ago. With theaters getting the green light across the Nation, this is the film you need to see.
