Now Available on HBO Max, Scoob Was A Pleasant Surprise

Scoob!

from Warner Bros Scoob!

Scooby-Doo has been around for more than 50 years. First airing with Scooby-Doo: Where Are You in 1969, the animated show only ran for two seasons and 25 episodes but the character would go on to be one of the more beloved family staples. Fast forward to 2020 and Warner Bros brought the character to a younger generation with Scoob!.

“With hundreds of cases solved and adventures shared, Scooby and the gang face their biggest, most challenging mystery ever — a plot to unleash the ghost dog Cerberus upon the world. As they race to stop this global dog-pocalypse, the gang discovers that Scooby has a secret legacy and an epic destiny greater than anyone could have imagined.”

An origin story for how Mystery Inc. came to be, Scoob! Thanks to the pandemic, this is another movie that didn’t get the theater run it as supposed to. Originally it went straight to onDemand, and now it’s available for streaming on HBO Max.

More Entertainment: My Spy – A Mixed Bag

Scoob! is loaded with star talent with voices from Will Forte, Mark Wahlberg, Jason Isaacs, Gina Rodriguez, and so many more. There could be a whole paragraph listing just the voice actors alone lending familiarity to characters most of us grew up with. Another great nod to the characters we loved, was the shot for shot remake of the opening sequence from the Saturday Morning Cartoon. The small simple things should make a more kid-friendly film at least enjoyable for the adults who watch them.

As for the kid-friendly take, its silly, fun, has laughable moments, and brings it to a modern era. One of the small hiccups in the film was song choice. Maybe it was to try and appeal to a certain demographic but Tupac’s California Love and Outkast’s B.o.B felt a little out of place. While it was out of place in a kid’s movie, it wasn’t too off-putting.

Scoob! might not jump up the top of your list off all-time favorite kids’ movies, but it is fun for the whole family. Throwing back to the Saturday Morning Cartoon era hopefully, it sets the stage for more Hannah Barbara in the future as well as sequels. Scoob! paid enough homage to the original as well as feeling like something new. The family-friendly film earns a solid 7/10.
