Orange Is The New Black: Can The Latinas Maintain Their Power in Litchfield?
The best part about Orange Is The New Black is how power is shifted in Litchfield between the different cultures. When the show first started it was Red and her crew that ran the prison. Then, Vee came onboard and shifted the power to the African-Americans. Once she was killed off, it sort of went from one race to another with Piper gaining a little momentum as she accidentally started a White Supremacy Group but as season 4 came to an end, it was clear the torch was passed or taken by the Latinas.
After Piper was strong-armed for her exotic panties business from the Latinas, she then the on the ladies which resulted in the leader, Maria Ruiz getting time added to her sentence. Once Maria was told of the news, all bets were off and she decided to move from the panties business and into hard drugs.
The Latinas are deep and may have the best backstories in the prison which is why their turn in the throne may be the wildest and funniest. Maria was a shadowy figure for the first three seasons but it’s her flunkies that have provided some of the best comical moments. However, if the ending to season 4 is any indication of what is to come, then the games are over.
How long will it last?
With the prison ready to fight back against the guards, we were left with Dayanara holding a guard hostage at gunpoint. What makes this sad and shows their power is that Daya was Maria before that moment. After Daya’s mother was released she asked Gloria to watch over Daya and make sure she doesn’t fall into the clutches of the new gang. Too late.
Now, the question is, how long will the Latinas rule last?
Since season 5 will take place over the course of three days it’s safe to say that it may be over by the end of the season. But, one thing is for sure, that will be the most explosive three days in Litchfield and the Latinas story.
