Oscars: Picking the Academy Award Winners

Oscars Academy award

With the Oscars on tonight, there are a lot of great nominees. 2019 had some beautifully crafted stories and characters. Looking at the movies we’ve watched, we’ve selected our projected winners on the biggest categories, abstaining from the categories we’re unfamiliar with. We’ll never cheat our readers like that.

Best Actor in a Lead

Who Should Win: Jaoquin Phoenix – Joker

Likely Picked: Jonathan Pryce – The Two Popes

Jaoquin Phoenix turned in one of the best performances seen in a long time. His Arthur Fleck was a brilliantly crafted tale of neglect and despair. However, the Oscars aren’t known to show love to a superhero or comic book films. More than likely Pryce wins the golden statue.

Best Actor in a Supporting Role

Who Should Win: Tom Hanks – A Beautiful Day in The Neighborhood

Likely Picked: Anthony Hopkins – The Two Popes

While this category is loaded with a ton of great actors in amazing roles. The consistency of the Oscars will dictate just who wins in what categories. A lot of times, you’ll see actors from the same movie win awards despite the film itself not winning many.

Actress in a Lead

Who Should Win: Saoirse Ronan – Little Women

Likely Pick: Renee Zellweger – Judy

As much as there are better roles, for some reason, the Oscars love to give out awards just because they’re based on real people.

Best Actress in A Supporting Role

Who Should Win: Margot Robbie – Bombshell

Likely Pick: Laura Dern – Marriage Story

Both Laura Dern and Margot Robbie are two actresses who are all over Hollywood right now. They’ve both had their share of success and both played some amazing roles. However, Dern will more likely take home the award this time around.

Animated Feature Film

Who Should Win: Klaus

Likely Pick: Toy Story 4

Klaus was the Santa origin story we didn’t know we needed but we got anyway. However, for some strange reason, Toy Story will always hold a special place in people’s hearts and will get rewarded for that brand recognition despite being a sub-par film.

Cinematography

Who Should Win: The Lighthouse

Likely Pick: 1917

Something about The Lighthouse that looks like an odd movie, yet somehow showed great transition. Too bad, the academy loves their war stories.

Directing

Who Should Win: Todd Phillips – Joker

Likely Pick: Martin Scorsese – The Irishman

The Oscars are notorious for picking names of notoriety over the current class of outstanding performers. Not that Scorsese’s The Irishman isn’t Oscar-worthy, but pass the torch to these deserving nominees already.

Best Picture

Who Should Win: Joker

Likely Pick: Ford v Ferrari

Do the Oscars ever get the best picture right? Each year great films come out and most of the time it seems like the people responsible for voting don’t even watch all the movies. Joker took an origin story that doesn’t exist in the original source material and made it believable. Ford v Ferrari will more than likely win though because again it’s based on real stories.

The Oscars seem to shun quality in work in favor of history. Will this year be the same
