Patrick Beverley Is A Must Sign Player For the Sacramento Kings In The Off-Season

Patrick Beverly

De’Aaron Fox has the skill to be an All-Star. He’s the floor general for the Sacramento Kings. Although, Fox can’t do it on his own. As good as Yogi Farrell has been, a backup PG needs to be brought in next season. There are a number of choices that make sense. There’s one free agent that would fit the team perfectly.

Patrick Beverley has been one of the NBA’s best defenders for the better part of 4 years. The 6-1 guard might not be the most effective scorer or passer. The impact he has had over his career is different than what any scoring guard can give you.

There’s still a lot of value to Beverley even without the defensive numbers. He’s averaged 7.7 points, 5 rebounds, and 3.8 assists this season. However, as previously mentioned, his true value is on the defensive end. There isn’t a better defensive guard in the NBA. He’s made a name for himself on defense.

The Kings need to find a lockdown defender in the backcourt. Beverley fills that need. De’Aaron Fox has proven he’s not a reliable shutdown guard in close games (The 28 point comeback by the Brooklyn Nets and D’Angelo Russell being a perfect example.)

Beverley holds opponents to a 40.4 percent field goal percentage in the 4th quarter. Fox only holds opponents to a 44.8 percent field goal percentage in the 4th. In no way should the Kings play Beverley in the 4th over Fox. It’s just something to think about.

And While it may seem like a small differential, the small percentage drop makes a difference on the score sheet. This is especially true considering the number of close games the Kings have been in this year. Those two or three missed shots Beverley causes might mean the difference between a win and a loss.

De’Aaron Fox has proven this year that he’s one of the NBA’s best young point guards. Beverley might rub off on him. He’ll get some teaching from a crafty veteran. Fox might pick up on some of the defensive skill-set of Beverly.

The Kings won’t get Beverley cheap. He’ll come at a price. A lot of teams will want to sign him. Again, a lot of his value comes from defense. Beverly won’t be signing with a team to be their starting point guard. If he does decide to choose the Kings, that’ll be the case as well.

The Sacramento Kings aren’t messing around. They want to make the playoffs next year. If they can sign Patrick Beverley, that solves the back-up PG issue that was plaguing them this season. There are a lot of other free agent point guards out there. Beverley’s defense makes him the top choice.
