Philadelphia Eagles: Can They Go Undefeated?

Jalen Hurts of the Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles are off to the best start in their franchise history. By starting 2022 off 8-0 they have been the talk of the NFL so far. However, this day and age it is next to impossible to go undefeated. Philadephia has a strong chance, but the odds are stacked against them.

While the Eagles have one of the easiest remaining schedules to close out their year, there are way too many variables on the road to an undefeated season. First and foremost is the change in weather. A small hiccup to most teams but once the cold northeastern weather hits so does the sloppy football. It doesn’t just put pressure on visiting teams, there are also the elements for the Eagles as well. Everyone plays at 100% when the temperature is above 70 degrees. Winter’s in Philly can get to single-digit temperatures and snow can change the play. Fast teams slow down come the mid-winter chill.

Then again, while the Philadelphia Eagles are rolling right now, we can’t help but remind you about division opponents. No matter how good a team is and how bad the rest of the division is, there’s always one that plays spoiler. The best example comes usually in the AFC East where the Patriots dominated for the better part of two decades. No matter how bad the Bills, Dolphins, and Jets were they’d often play spoiler late in the season to the Pats.

The same could be said for any team in the NFC East, not only in the past but this year as well. The Eagles might be atop of the division for now, but the rest of the division isn’t exactly slouching. They still have to face the 6-2 Dallas Cowboys once, and the 6-2 New York Giants twice. They might be the best of the three teams, but defeating a division opponent is tough, sweeping the entire division is next to impossible. Teams keep a tab on division opponents to try and get an edge come game day. Throw in the fact they see each of them a couple of times a year and preparation is much easier the second time around.

But then again, there’s a good chance they’ll face each divisional opponent with their regular schedule, but possibly a third time in the playoffs. The Philadelphia Eagles have the best chance of winning the division, but the likelihood they’ll go undefeated this season is very low. Luckily for them, they’re the team to beat so far.
