Philadelphia Eagles: Defensive Preview – Is the secondary better?
If it is one area, where the Philadelphia Eagles had to improve—their defense would be top of the list. Here is the thing with the Eagles defense that went unnoticed. Yes, they gave up over 340 yards per game but only 21 points per contest. That average has them ranked with playoff teams and most of that was due to their struggles on offense.
One area the Eagles must improve on is their pass rush. In 2016, the Eagles registered only 34 sacks. Moreover, playing in a division where the quarterbacks are not that mobile, they must do a better job if they wish to be a serious contender. The Eagles drafted DE Derek Barnett in hopes he could become the next Reggie White or at least work his way towards being a good player.
For a team whose offense either stalled or faced many three & out, it is safe to say the Eagles defense did pretty well.
This has to be the year where Jordan Hicks makes his mark. Playing the MLB position, he should be in line for more than 58 tackles and one sack. Although he did register five interceptions, he must do more. The MLB is the captain of the defense and Hicks must step up.
The Eagles are in a division where teams are suffering on the ground (except the Cowboys) and they must take advantage of their opportunities. If they can force a few quick three & outs and give their offense great field position, then it takes a load off the defensive side.
The Philadelphia Eagles secondary is not terrible but if the offense can provide quick points forcing teams to play catch up, this will play right into the Eagles hands.
On paper, the defense of the Philadelphia Eagles looks to be vastly improved. However, we all know that paper is easily torn. Will the same be said for the 2017 Eagles defense?
