Philadelphia Eagles: Offensive Spotlight Player – LeGarrette Blount
The Philadelphia Eagles are hoping the end is not here for newly required RB—LeGarrette Blount. While many Eagles fans will point the finger at Carson Wentz as the one to lead them back to the playoffs in 2017—it will be the legs of Blount who determines the success.
Blount is coming off a 1,100-yard, 18-touchdown season with the New England Patriots in 2016. The Eagles hit the jackpot when the Pats decided to not resign Blount. If Blount can have similar success with the Eagles, the pressure will be off Wentz’s shoulders to avoid any talk of a sophomore slump.
With the Philadelphia Eagles backfield already loaded with Darren Sproles, Wendell Smallwood and possibly Ryan Mathews (he was released on August 15.) it’s a safe bet to say Blunt will not see a normal workload of 250+ carries.
However, that does not mean he cannot be as productive.
The Eagles offense has completely changed their dynamic with Blount, however, we cannot forget the addition they made in the offseason to the weakest skilled position—wide receiver. The addition of Torrey Smith and Alshon Jeffery will not only give Wentz the necessary weapons needed to rise but it also opens the door for the Blount and the ground game to excel.
If Jeffery, Smith and Jordan Matthews can create matchup problems within a defenses scheme that will open up better-running lanes for Blount and crew. With a veteran back like Blount paired with Wentz, the Eagles offense should be explosive for the 2017 season.
Blount is the key to the Philadelphia Eagles making a strong push for the playoffs. If he can stay healthy and produce between 800 and 1,000 yards the Eagles stand a good chance at being competitive. If not, the team may just find themselves looking up at the other three teams again in 2017.
