Should the Philadelphia Eagles Look To Blake Bortles As A Backup?

After what happened last season in the playoffs, the Philadelphia Eagles would be wise to grab a quarterback this offseason. While the 2020 NFL Draft is QB heavy, the team needs a veteran, hopefully, a younger one than what they had in Josh McCown. Blake Bortles fits perfectly here.

While many will down Bortles, he has shown the ability to win. His career has fallen a bit off the deep end, but as a backup, he could come in and win a game or two if needed. Eagles’ fans are not hoping for another Carson Wentz injury but knowing that have someone who can run the offense would be great insurance.

Another thing to factor in is Nick Foles. Before Foles took over and led the team to its Super Bowl victory in 2018, he was in the same league Bortles was. He had his moments with the Eagles early under Chip Kelly but then was used mostly as a backup with the Rams and then the Chiefs before coming back to Philly. Bortles could slide right into the role.

What McCown couldn’t do against the Seattle Seahawks, Bortles should have no trouble with execution. The Eagles’ attack is not one dimension but Bortles has enough arm strength to get the ball down the field and enough movement in his legs to gain the extra five yards needed on a scramble. The best part is he will come cheap. Last season, while with the Los Angeles Rams, Bortles took home $1M. This is perfect for the Eagles’ salary cap.

Blake Vortlres will not be viewed as a threat to take Wentz’s job. If Wentz can continue to climb that ladder as a QB, then all Bortles has to do is sit there with a clipboard, take notes and be ready just n case. This is a win-win for all parties involved.
