Philadelphia Eagles: Should Nick Foles Be A Target, Again?

Nick Foles Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl

When it comes to the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback situation, it’s now or never for Jalen Hurts. The team made some splashy moves in the offseason to upgrade their offense. Given the team’s reliance on their ability to run the football last year and be less reliant on Hurt’s arm to win the game, should the Eagles call an old familiar friend, Nick Foles as a backup plan?

There were rumors that Foles was on his way back to Philly at one point but that all seemed to fall apart. Now that he’s back to being a free agent and free to sign anywhere, should Philadelphia come calling with enough money, Foles should certainly eye a return, no matter Hurts’ play. Not that the Eagles should back the Brinks truck up to welcome back their former Super Bowl champ, but there has to be something enticing on the table.

For one, the NFL Draft proved that teams aren’t really in the market for a quarterback this year. One QB was picked before the third round this year and that was only because the Pittsburgh Steelers were desperate. With Ben Roethlisberger retiring the team needed to stir up some interest in this year’s team. From then on out, only 5 more quarterbacks were drafted, most of which will be backups on their current team. If Nick Foles plans to continue his NFL career, there won’t be many teams calling unless someone goes down in camp.

Then of course there’s the Philly of it all. Foles has never played better than he did for the Philadelphia Eagles. There’s no shame in returning to the team to back up Jalen Hurts. Give back to the team that you’ve had your success. Foles himself has never been an elite quarterback, but he knows how to take care of the football and make smart plays. There doesn’t need to be pressure on Jalen Hurts just because Foles is back in-house. Step into that backup role and teach a young kid the ins and outs of the game. Nick Foles could teach him how to be an effective quarterback without being the best QB on the field. He could be the veteran back up in the traditional sense of the role without breathing down Hurts’ back to take his job.

Nick Foles has always been the insurance policy in a Philadelphia Eagles uniform, but this time it could be different. Instead of going into camp worrying if Hurts doesn’t perform, Foles would take his job, he could be the guy who’s there as a “break glass in case of emergency” situation and the team would be no worse off. The Eagles have plenty of playmakers in-house now. Hurts has to be the guy for the Eagles going forward. However, that doesn’t mean that they can’t afford to bring in a guy who mentors him not only in smart football but hopefully a playoff push as well. If the Philadelphia Eagles come calling, Nick Foles has to answer.
