Playstation: Are They Copying Xbox Again With the DualSense Edge?
When it comes to the console wars, both Sony and Microsoft are constantly trying to one-up each other. Playstation has long been the leader in sales, yet Xbox seems to have an ever-growing popularity in the gaming community. So much so that lately it looks like Sony is taking a few pages out of the Xbox playbook. Things are looking awful familiar out of Sony and Microsoft should be on alert. When the latest next-gen consoles were released, the PS5 controller looked a lot like the Xbox controller after years of having its own style. Then came the answer to Xbox’s Gamepass with PS+ tiers. Now Sony is at it again with their DualSense Edge controller that again mimics the Xbox Elite controller. So what gives?
Today, we are thrilled to unveil the DualSense Edge wireless controller for PlayStation 5, the first-ever high-performance, ultra-customizable controller developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Designed to give you an edge in gameplay by allowing you to create custom controls, the DualSense Edge wireless controller invites you to craft your own unique gaming experience tailored to your playstyle.
It appears Playstation is giving in to an ever-changing market when it comes to consoles. Despite years of standing out with their design on the PS controller staying relatively the same, they took a drastic turn with the PS5. One of the biggest issues they had was how cheap their controllers felt in your hand. Light weight might be good for comfort while gaming, but they often felt fragile.
More Gaming: Is the Xbox Elite Controller Worth The Money?
The landscape for gaming is changing too. Gamepass allowed players to try a host of new games that they otherwise would’ve paid $40-$60 for. Since most of their target audience is younger, they typically don’t buy games as often. Either that or they’re an older crowd who has other priorities that tie up their paycheck. Whatever the case may be, games are taking longer to develop and people are buying less. Those two factors alone make it harder to come up with consistent revenue. However, a subscription service over the long haul and microtransactions more than make up the difference.
But the real question is, why is Sony/Playstation so late to the party with their controller? Xbox is already on its second iteration of their Elite controller and rumors are already swirling about the next gen. Is Sony trying to sway more customers to make the switch while they wait for production and sales of the PS5 to catch up with demand? They’ve had every opportunity in the past few years to drop the controller but wait until people can’t get their hands on their console to make the announcement. It’s almost as if they’re distracting from the fact they haven’t been able to keep up.
Whatever the case may be, gamers love whatever gives them a competitive edge. Throw in being to tailor the controller to your own unique play style and fans will eat it up, even if it’s just a rebranded Xbox controller.
