Schmigadoon title card

When it comes to stepping outside of your comfort zone when it comes to new shows, Apple TV+ has you covered with Schmigadoon. Yes, even the name sounds a little ridiculous but is a throwback to the earlier days of musicals. Surrounding itself in homages and parodies of classic musicals, Schmigadoon is Apple’s latest trendy original programming.

“On a backpacking trip designed to reinvigorate their relationship, a couple discovers a magical town living in a 1940s musical; they then learn that they can’t leave until they find true love.”

The premise almost seems like a made for Hallmark Channel around the holidays but it’s actually quite quirky and fun. It goes from fun, to over-the-top ridiculous but in a cheerful way. One of the main things that stood out in the story is in the first episode Melissa and Josh stumble upon this town, Schmigadoon, and meet a leprechaun who informs them they can’t leave until they find true love. From then on out, that’s how their story unfolds.

However, if you pull back the curtain on the rest of the townspeople you have to wonder, are they stuck in this town too? Not that it’s a town full of single men and women trying to find their other half but each person in town seems to have something they’re hiding as well. If you haven’t watched, this is where it would be a good time to stop reading and come back.

Take each character from Schmigadoon and realize they’re not living their “true love” either. There’s the mayor, appropriately named Mayor Menlove, who although is married, is hiding his secret feelings. The unwed school teacher who’s taking care of her “younger brother”. The doctor falls for Melissa despite already being in a relationship. The list goes on and on of people who are hiding behind their “true love”.

Is this town Schmigadoon not just a place of an unusual cast of characters, but a place that each one has stumbled upon and because they hide behind what their heart truly feels, is stuck there to live out their days? Did the leprechaun give the same speech numerous times to where no one can cross the bridge home until they admit what they’ve been hiding and truly accept it?
