Set It Up Wasn’t The Best We’ve Seen From Netflix

Set It Up

I’ll be the first to admit that I love Netflix Original films. Set it Up does not fall into that category. It’s a huge mess. This is one of those rare Netflix films I didn’t enjoy.

Let me start off by saying that Set It Up does have some redeeming qualities. The story and script are intriguing. Two overworked employees try to get their bosses together in order to give themselves more time away from the office. It’s a great concept that ultimately falls flat due to some terrible acting.

Zoey Deutch is one of Hollywood’s up and coming actresses. Throw in Lucy Liu, Taye Diggs, and Glen Powell, and you’ve got a sneaky good cast for your movie. And despite this cast, the movie was an absolute train wreck.

The overdramatic scenes ( when Taye Diggs character has an outburst throwing stuff around his office), and the sappy love story ( Deutch and Powell sharing a pizza), the dialogue and acting is just not on par with other romantic comedies. Although, the actors weren’t given much to work with.

It’s surprising how well Set It Up has done for Netflix. A lot of subscribers are raving about this movie. It has got its good qualities. Deutch and Powell do have some chemistry. There are a few scenes (like the pizza scene) which are hurt by cheesy dialogue.

Liu and Diggs don’t add much to this film at all. While they are both integral parts to Set It Up, it just didn’t seem like either wanted to be there. It was just a very basic job by both. Nothing really stood out from their performances.

There are just too many awkward and terribly unrealistic scenes. A lot of the comedy feels forced and rushed, as does the relationship between Diggs and Liu’s characters. Things develop way too quickly. The same can be said for Deutch and Powell as well. The story needed to be fleshed out more to make it more believable.

Overall, Set It Up wasn’t the best original film from Netflix. The acting, plot, and dialogue don’t quite hit the spot for me. I wanted to like this film, but I just couldn’t. That’s not to say it’s not worth your time. I didn’t happen to enjoy this, others might.
