Should Solo: A Star Wars Story Be Continued On Disney+

Solo: A Star Wars Story

Let’s face it, Solo: A Star Wars story didn’t go over as expected. While fans and critics have been panning Star Wards movies since the original trilogy was released, there’s still a large audience that wants more of the stories we all came to love. Fans are absolutely in love with The Mandalorian so far and the hype for the upcoming Obi-wan is as real as it gets. Which begs the question, should Solo pivot from theatrical releases and become part of the Disney+ family?

Given that Han Solo is a fan favorite, diving deeper into his story is an absolute must. Solo was rumored to be part of trilogy and the feature film definitely set itself up to have more of the story told. Starring Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, and Emilia Clark as Qi’ra the cast was praised for their performances of characters fans clung to. Unfortunately for Solo, it wasn’t the cast that was the problem, it was the story. One of the main issues watching was they played it out as a love story, but the two were separated at the start of the film and you didn’t see Qi’ra again until the final part of the film. The separation of the two isn’t a new concept in films but how do you not return to a character we’re supposed to invest in until the end?

For all its flaws, Solo: A Star Wars Story did exactly what a potential franchisee should do. Gave us a great title character, gave us accurate portrayals of fan favorites, it even gave the cliffhanger ending with Darth Maul to keep us wanting more. But with such a high budget and low return, it looks like Solo was put back on the shelf, which is an obvious mistake. Between Ehrenreich’s portrayal of Han and Glover as Lando, fans wouldn’t mind a little more from the duo.

Whether it ends up being a made-for-streaming movie that cuts the budget down and gets the product to the masses, or it ends up being a series that enjoys the success as the Mandalorian the building blocks are there. Solo’s only uphill battle was making it seem like it was part of the Star Wars universe. If Disney can’t figure out how to do that, then the future of Star Wars itself needs to be put on hold. After all, they did cap off the Skywalker Saga now and need to pivot away from that main story. Without keeping fans interested in characters beyond that, the franchise is dead in the water.

Solo: A Star Wars Story deserves to go on as a fully told story. Giving up on it after one failed showing is like walking out of a play in the first act, it hasn’t even built to a climax yet. While future plans might be scrapped on Solo, Disney is making a huge mistake. Disney+ would be the perfect home to tell their story and even allow potential spinoffs with Lando down the road. If Disney+ is going to be a hub for everything Star Wars, then giving Solo one more shot should be in the cards.
