Should The Crow Movie Reboot Be A Series Instead

The Crow movie still

The Crow has had a fan following for years and never can quite find its footing. Originally written as a comic book, the story would be adapted into a feature film in 1994, but losing its lead actor, changed the direction of the next few films. Neither of the sequels would gain any ground, however, there have been multiple iterations in the comic book world keeping the title alive. Rather than continuously fail to secure a reboot, is it time studios give up on a film and bring it to streaming as a television show?

“The night before his wedding, musician Eric Draven (Brandon Lee) and his fiancée are brutally murdered by members of a violent inner-city gang. On the anniversary of their death, Eric rises from the grave and assumes the gothic mantle of the Crow, a supernatural avenger. Tracking down the thugs responsible for the crimes and mercilessly murdering them, Eric eventually confronts head gangster Top Dollar (Michael Wincott) to complete his macabre mission.”

The Crow will always be one of my all-time favorite movies. It has a little bit of everything from love and loss, comedy, action, violence, revenge, and a kick a— soundtrack. The toughest part about rebooting the movie franchise is the creative differences studios, directors, and actors have had over the years. Each one wants to pay proper respect to Brandon Lee who died tragically while filming the original film.

Too much goes into movies as big-budget films are often a gamble, especially with such a cult following. In 1998, there was a short-lived show The Crow: Stairway to Heaven was created for Canadian audiences but would last just one season. Streaming has given way for old titles to be rebooted and The Crow should instantly become a favorite on that list.

Instead of trying to recreate a half-hearted reboot of the franchise as a money grab, it’s time to pivot for television. Someone like HBO Max or Netflix should pick up the series for a more adult tone to the show and allow for much more violence.

13 episode seasons could turn into a long-running series centered around one central character in the title role. If the writers wanted to get extra creative they could turn it into an anthology series to change the story as it goes, while having a continuous central plot.

Each time a reboot gets announced and canceled, faith that it will ever happen fades. While there’s talk of bringing it back still, Jason Momoa was tied to the previous reboot and stepped away as well. If they can’t make it with one of Hollywood’s most popular actors right now, it’s never getting done.

It’s time to give up on The Crow as a movie franchise and bring it to the small screen for a wider audience.
