Should the Miami Dolphins Consider LeSean McCoy?
LeSean McCoy has no intention of retiring despite still being a free agent. Earlier this week he revealed he’s been talking with a few teams about a return. Without revealing just who he’s had talks with, should the Miami Dolphins be calling?
First and foremost, LeSean McCoy might be an injury risk, but he also has a tremendous upside. With the Kansas City Chiefs last season he averaged 4.6 ypc rushing, and 6.5 receiving with 4 touchdowns. For his career, despite his injuries, he’s averaged 4.5 ypc and 7.5 receiving with 73 touchdowns. In 11 seasons, he has just over 11,000 yards rushing and is 22nd on the all-time rushing list.
More Dolphins: 5 Players Who Need To Step Up
Fans might be scared off with the injury concerns, but he’d have to beat out youngsters Matt Breida and Jordan Howard. Both Howard and Breida were brought in this offseason, both players are under 25 years old. The Dolphins could use veteran leadership in a very young running back room.
At 32 years old, McCoy wouldn’t have to carry the load as he did in Buffalo and would only have to play the cold weather games later in the season. Miami could be the ultimate career ended for the veteran. Banged and beat up in the colder games of Philadelphia, Buffalo, and Kansas City. The only thing Shady would have to battle as a member of the Miami Dolphins is the Florida heat.
Image a backfield of a speedy Matt Breida, a quick Jordan Howard, and a rumbler like LeSean McCoy. This late in his career, McCoy doesn’t need the spotlight he used to and a contract should be team-friendly. Right now, they have enough question marks that taking a flyer on the former league leader wouldn’t hurt the bank. Dolphins head coach Brian Flores had a knack for getting the most out of players last season and might be enough to lure the veteran to South Florida. Shady might be looking to go to a competitor and the Dolphins might not be it, but with an up-and-coming coach and QB in Tua Tagovailoa the flash of Miami might be enough.
