Should the Miami Dolphins Trade Up in This Year’s Draft

We’re officially a month away from this year’s NFL draft. With all the smokescreens going on, the one thing that’s almost for sure is the Miami Dolphins will be taking a quarterback, but where?

Long have there been rumors of trading up despite only two teams needing quarterbacks ahead of them. With a deep draft class, the Dolphins can sit at their fifth pick and not have to give up a single draft pick. However, if Miami wants a top prospect, there are plenty of teams behind them that would be willing to trade up as well.

All offseason Miami has been linked to veteran QBs like Tom Brady, Teddy Bridgewater, and now Cam Newton. None of which will be the long term answer under center for the Dolphins. Neither will current quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.

More Dolphins: It Doesn’t Matter Who They Draft At QB

The only team ahead of them in this year’s draft that will take a QB as it stands is the Cincinnati Bengals. There’s a chance that teams like the Los Angeles Chargers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, or Carolina Panthers could trade up to get their guy. There’s even the outside chance the New England Patriots could make a move for their replacement for Tom Brady.

So will the Dolphins trade up?

With current projections, three quarterbacks can be taken by the time the Dolphins pick fifth. Joe Burrow is expected to go first to the Bengals. Then its a coin flip whether or not teams try to leapfrog the Dolphins. Tua Tagovailoa has been the most talked about when it comes to potential future Dolphins. He could fall as far as five, or he can be snagged when the Redskins select next. There’s an off chance new head coach Ron Rivera starts with his guy right upfront.

The only way they absolutely have to trade up is fear that someone trades up and takes Tua and the next team in need tries to trade up and select Justin Herbert.

There’s absolutely zero reasons to panic as one of the top three quarterbacks should be there when Miami makes there pick. They could go all-in with their first three round picks to try and trade up for Burrow, who many think is the best quarterback in the draft.

The Dolphins could trade up, but they definitely don’t have to. The chance they trade up is slim unless Cincinnati wants to stockpile picks.
