Should the New England Patriots Ask About Wentz Next Year?
The New England Patriots are in need of a long term quarterback. The Philadelphia Eagles have two. Carson Wentz is only 27 years old and could use a fresh start. New England has an abundance of picks with 8 and a projected three more compensation picks. Just because Wentz is struggling in Philly, doesn’t mean his career is over.
From the Patriots’ standpoint, they have Jarrett Stidham who is still young enough to develop as a potential starter down the road. The biggest hurdle with the Eagles moving on will be Wentz and his long-term deal. The Patriots are projected to have close to $70M this offseason for free agents and could easily take on a new deal. Having single-digit wins for the first time in a long while, the Patriots will be toward the middle of the pack in the draft order. With his struggles and bloated contract, New England could more than likely make the move for a second-rounder and potentially a late-round pick or mid-draft pick next season.

From the Eagles’ standpoint, Jalen Hurts was Wentz insurance. However, if he comes in and is the Nick Foles like spark with the Eagles there’s no way they can go back to Wentz. They also could get double-digit draft picks with compensatory picks. Carson Wentz needs a fresh start. As soon as the city got behind Foles in their Super Bowl run, the doubt sank in. Philadelphia is one of the toughest teams to gain fan support, so once you slip mentally, it’s a hard road to recovery and they’ll let you know.
New England isn’t much better but at least they’re used to winning. With a future Hall of Fame coach in Bill Belichick, Wentz will not only get a fresh start but also have plenty of knowledge to feed off. If New England can get playmakers in the draft in the first and third round, it will be a whole different look when the Pats take the field next season. The Patriots struggling this season would lower expectations next year and both Stidham and Wentz could start with a clean slate.

Carson Wentz isn’t a bad quarterback. He showed that before he got injured. His biggest problem is never recovering the mental aspect after his season-ending injury. As soon as the doubt entered his head, it seems he questions every throw he’s making. He needs to wipe the slate clean just as much as the Pats need to wipe this season from memory. If New England can’t get a top quarterback in this draft, they need to be on the phone with Philly as soon as they’re allowed.
