Should the Philadelphia Eagles Move On From Doug Pederson?

Eagles Doug Pederson

After this year, there are plenty of coaches that could be on the hot seat. Some organizations might give a longer leash due to the pandemic but when it comes to moving on you have to look at their work as a whole. When it comes to the Philadelphia Eagles you have to wonder how much longer they can afford to slide under Doug Pederson.

If you explore his career as a whole, he came out firing taking the Eagles to a Super Bowl, but a championship shouldn’t buy him a free pass. Consider Don Shula won with the Baltimore Colts and then again with the Miami Dolphins. Bill Parcells won two with the Giants and would go on to coach elsewhere. Two of the most well-respected coaches in NFL history coached for more than one team and were let go after winning a Super Bowl.

Then you have to dig deeper. Fans can tolerate sloppy play and even the occasional losses, but each year the Eagles seem to be getting worse. After their Super Bowl run. Philly took a quick turn around after his first season of 7-9 to winning the Super Bowl. They’d finish that epic run at 13-3 and knock off the always tough to beat Patriots. Two 9-7 seasons later and so far this season they’re 3-6-1 and that lone tie is what is keeping them in first place in a division that’s equally as bad with a three-way tie record of 3-7.

More Eagles: Dolphins Loss Is All on Doug Pederson

One of the biggest red flags of Pederson’s tenure came this weekend after a loss. When asked if it was time to bench struggling quarterback Carson Wentz his response was “benching Carson Wentz would send the wrong message to the team.” As a coach, you want to be able to support your guys, but you also have to make the hard decisions. Part of making those decisions is to make those switches when a guy isn’t getting it done and communicate to your guy why you did.

Some guys need that setback to get them back on track. Not every athlete loses all hope when benched, it’s a wake-up call that they need to regain focus. Wentz was pushed by Nick Foles and would go on to have a stellar season until getting injured. If Pederson wants to get Wentz and the Eagles back on track, maybe it’s time to make the switch.

Having a bad year will happen, especially in today’s NFL. However, when a team is trending in the wrong direction and the development of young talent seems to be working in reverse, it’s time to start finger-pointing. Maybe it’s on the Eagles front office and lack of a total team outlook. Whoever is to blame, it’s on the coaches to improve. Under Doug Pederson, the Eagles are no longer improving and it’s time to question whether he should be on the hot seat.
