Shrinking on Apple TV+ Might Be Your New Favorite Comedy

Apple TV+'s Shrinking

Apple continues to hit home runs with its original content. Their latest success story comes in the form of yet another comedy Shrinking and has ties to another classic for Apple TV+, Ted Lasso. If you need a little bit more convincing, some of the other show creators have had their fair share of hits including Scrubs and How I Met Your Mother. When your show’s creators include Brett Goldstein, Bill Lawrence, and Jason Segel, who have all had their share of comedy gold, you have a good chance of success.

From Apple TV+

Jimmy is struggling to grieve the loss of his wife while being a dad, friend, and therapist. He decides to try a new approach with everyone in his path: unfiltered, brutal honesty. Can he help himself by helping others? Will it bring him back into the light?

Apple continues to shine in both original content and comedies. They might not have as big a catalog as the other streamers, but most of their content will keep your interest somewhat. With that being said, their comedies have been exactly what you need if you need a good laugh. Shows like Ted Lasso, Mythic Quest, Trying, and now Shrinking are making Apple TV+ the go-to streamer for funny shows. So what makes Shrinking stand out?

No, it’s not just the big names attached to it. Granted Brett Goldstein is great as Roy Kent and we’ll always love Jason Segel as Marshall Eriksen, but Shrinking has its own vibe. Segel stars as the main character, Jimmy, but there are plenty of familiar faces along the way. Star Wars fans will instantly recognize Harrison Ford. SNL fans will see a familiar face in Heidi Gardner. Speaking of Scrubs, Christa Miller as the nosey, yet caring neighbor is a gem. We even get a familiar face from Married With Children, Ted McGinley.

Each of them is delightful in their own way on how they fit into Jimmy’s world, but they’re only one pillar of the show. Jessica Williams as Gabby is the friend we all need in our lives to keep us straight. Luke Tennie as Sean brings brilliant interactions with Segel’s Jimmy. Lukita Maxwell as his daughter, Alice, brings a young teen angst to very real and adult problems and despite her character’s own grief, has an enormous support system. On-screen chemistry within each relationship brings authenticity to life.

Every character on Shrinking has their own challenges and represents different stages of grief/trauma. Luckily for the viewers, they also represent different stages of healing as well. That’s the strength of the show. Not every struggle or challenge will relate to every viewer, but each separately could. Shrinking challenges audiences with dealing with their own struggles and at its core has a blunt honesty between characters making it not only funny but lightens some heavy topics. The ability to find a bit of light in tough times is a reminder we all need now and then.

With that being said, seeing how others may deal with similar situations may even guide audiences to the help they’re too shy to ask for. Realatibilty is key for this show as grief and trauma have the ability to make people feel isolated. Seeing scenarios where people can cope, grow, and even find humor might be the break we all need from our own struggles.
