Signing Colin Kaepernick Doesn’t Fix NFL’s Race Problem

NFL Colin Kaepernick

Right now, Sports Illustrated is running a piece on possible landing spots for Colin Kaepernick. With supposed links to the Los Angeles Chargers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and even Tennessee Titans, they go on to speculate that he’ll more than likely land with LAC due to previous ties.

As much as Colin Kaepernick deserves a second chance in the NFL after being run out due to his protests, does anyone else feel like it’s a publicity stunt? With all the political unrest in the world today, it seems like they’re just trying to distance themselves from racism after consistently fumbling over it in the past. This seems less like giving an athlete a second chance, and more like an apology tour.

The whole situation stinks of desperation. Why is Colin Kaepernick all the sudden the hot free-agent quarterback? After all, he hasn’t played in a couple of seasons now, why should he get more of a chance to sign with a team than say, Cam Newton?

Despite coming off an injury, teams normally are more likely to go after the younger QB who has played consistently over the past few seasons. Why are more teams looking to Kaepernick than Newton? Simple, the NFL wants to save face with the athletes and fans who they’ve alienated over the past couple of years.

Colin Kaepernick 100% deserves another shot, but maybe the league can not be as obvious about their motives. Both Newton and Kaepernick are similar in terms of talent and both have shown they can get teams to Super Bowls. The fact that one has more opportunity than the other goes well beyond the day today.

This offseason there were plenty of opportunities for teams to bring in quarterback depth. Teams were in the mix for free agents as well as plenty being taking in this year’s draft. Now that the NFL was made to look foolish in the face of fans by running Kaepernick out, now all of a sudden they have an interest in him? He’s never been out of shape, he’s been training and available all offseason, now that Black Lives Matter is back in the forefront they want to use Kaepernick as their pawn.

On top of the fact that the NFL is looking even worse as they continue to struggle signing minority coaching candidates, minority general managers, and still don’t have an African American owned the team. Going all-in on Colin Kaepernick won’t fix your race barrier in today’s NFL. Even if he’s brought back, what will he play, another 3 years? Then they’re right back at the forefront of needing to address their race issue.
