Medusa

What’s your favorite B&M floorleess coaster? A lot of enthusiasts will say Medusa at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom. This might be the best version of this coaster style in the world. Not only unique, it’s a fun ride that will leave you breathless.

Some will discredit Medusa because it’s at one of the lesser known Six Flags parks. That’s a grave mistake to make. In fact, Medusa is (In my opinion) better than Rougarou at Cedar Point (another B&M floorleess coaster). This isn’t a coaster to be taken lightly.

The one thing about Medusa you’ll notice first, it’s got a themed station. You’ll be inside of a temple structure. While it’s not much, this adds to the ride experience. I’ve always been a fan of the themeing, no matter how small it may be. The structure looks really impressive from the outside.

Let’s get to the actual coaster. Like most B&M floorless coasters, you’ll start up a lift hill leading you right into a vertical loop. It’s worth noting, the vertical loop on Medusa is one of the tallest in the world at 128 feet. You don’t really feel it as you go through it, though. It’s an impressive stat, but doesn’t add much effect to the coaster.

What makes Medusa unique is the Sea Serpent Roll. This is one of the more unique and rare elements on a coaster. At first, I had no idea what I was experiencing. (I did very little research on the coaster beforehand.) I thought it was a basic Cobra Roll, then I figured Pretzel Loop. It wasn’t until I studied the element that I came to realize it was a Sea Serpent Roll.

It’s hard to distinguish the Sea Serpent Roll from the Cobra Roll. There are only 3 other coasters that have one. When Steel Curtain opens at Kennywood, there will be 5 total. The element gave a different type of feeling. It’s not as intense as a Cobra Roll, but you’ll get a bit of an intense rush go through your body.

The rest of Medusa is a pretty straightforward B&M floorleess. You’ll get a lot of G’s going through the intense helix’s. These are my second favorite part of the coaster. In addition, Medusa features a dive loop and zero-G roll. Again, this does feel a bit more intense than Rougarou at Cedar Point. One thing I’ll also say, I bang my head a lot less on Medusa than Rougarou.

It’s hard to not appreciate Medusa. This is a top-notch coaster. You might not come to Discovery Kingdom to ride this specifically, but you’ll want to make it a priority. B&M makes some amazing coasters. It goes without saying that Medusa is one of the best.
