Does Slender Man Still Scare Enough to remain Relevant Years Later?
Continuing with horror films that have grown so popular over the last couple years is Sony’s Slender Man. What started as an internet meme in 2009, quickly grew into a sensation. From meme to Youtube, to featured in classic video games, and a video game of his own Slender Man was all over the place. However, a full decade after his original appearance is it too late for a feature-length film?
There’s no doubt with the spark of the horror genre rekindling the fear of the unknown, studios have been trying to up the ante and ride the wave of excitement. It’s been years since Slender Man’s popularity was at its height but movie genres come in waves. The only genre that seems to beat the curse right now is the superhero film. Action films have their ups and downs, horror films come and go, stoner comedies bring people out in waves so it’s not too far off to think an older property without a previous franchise can be brought to life well past its prime.
From IMDb.com
“Slender Man tells the story of a tall, thin, horrifying figure with unnaturally long arms and a featureless face, who is reputed to be responsible for the haunting and disappearance of countless children and teens.”
While Slender Man may seem like an original concept, certain aspects of the character have a familiar feel to him. The haunting and abduction of children and teens feels like every other horror trope throughout cinema history. How does Slender Man differ from Freddy Krueger of A Nightmare on Elm Street fame or Jason Voorhees in Friday the 13th films? While different character traits might be present, the similarities might feel too close to a rip off to really lure fans in. In theaters August 24th, will Slender Man meet expectations or disappoint? As always, you can vote below. [CMRickTwitter]
