Sony’s Playstation 5 Doesn’t Quite Hit the Mark

Playstation 5

The Playstation event kicked off yesterday with mixed results. There were a handful of games revealed as well as the console itself. On top of the console, the PS5 looks like it could come with a couple of extra perks as well.

Looking back on the event we’re not exactly sold on the next-gen console just yet. First, the design itself looks a little futuristic and is a drastic change from the plain box look Playstation has had since the PS2. While it still has the elongated slim frame to show of stand-up or lay flat design, the winged edges along the top give it a unique look. From a consumer standpoint, I could flip a coin to decide whether I liked it or not and be satisfied with the results either way.

Of course, everyone’s asking “What about the games?”. The Playstation event laid out the first few games to hit the PS5, and only one really made us truly excited. I’m talking about Spider-man: Miles Morales. Continuing the rebooted Spider-man gaming franchise, Miles Morales looks like it will be continuing on from the PS4 iteration.

More Gaming: Jedi Fallen Order – Finally A Good Star Wars Game

Sure there’s a new Resident Evil on the way, and of course, they will have console exclusives down the road, but nothing says rush out and get it this holiday season just yet.

And why wouldn’t they leave off the price tag? Sony intentionally didn’t want to sway consumers without first trying to reduce the shock of the initial sticker price. The Playstation 5 is said to come with the console, controller, media remote, charging stand, camera and headset. Anyone who’s been a gamer for years knows what these will cost alone, so it’s safe to imagine they won’t be free of charge along the way.

While each individual item being added into a bundle would be pretty sweet, I’d estimate about $200-$300 worth of extra add-ons even at a bundled price. Controllers are about $60 dollars. A good headset will run you about $100. The remote is probably the least expensive on a high side of say $20 bucks. All that and we’re not even talking next-gen console pricing yet.

More than likely Sony will target its competitor said to be around $399. For newer consoles, that’s not too bad. With the cellphone market hitting $800 to $1,000 for smartphones, it’s not crazy to think a gaming console will be closer to $500. Which, going back to the extra in box items could push the PS5 to upwards of $599 or $699.

Despite it being the next wave of console gaming, Sony and the Playstation 5 don’t really give a real reason to rush out and buy at launch. Hopefully, by the time the holidays roll around, they will have figured out how to wow us.
